Reviser

Reviser: Line Editing, Copyediting, Proofreading

After many years an intelligence officer in the U.S. Marines, a Merchant Marine ship captain, and a world adventurer, I have shifted my focus to writing and editing. I have edited, revised, and proofread website content, presentations, policy documents, speeches, manuscripts, screenplays, newsletters, and much more for U.S. Government agencies, major companies in the software and hospitality industries, and independent writers.

Services

Every project is different. While I primarily focus on the two specific services below, there is no hard edge between different kinds of editing. Whether this is your first rodeo, or you are not sure exactly what you need, please get in touch. No matter what your project or budget is, I am confident that we can work out what your needs are and how I can help meet them.

Line Edit

Most independent authors are primarily interested in having a line edit to make the writing polished and professional. This includes correcting errors and improving flow, clarity, and pacing. Line editing includes the following:

  • Correction: spelling, grammar, punctuation, dropped words, incorrectly used words
  • Revision: word choice, wordiness, difficult, awkward or ambiguous sections, and restructuring to improve the flow
  • Notation: marking continuity errors and plot holes, and ensuring a consistent style

Rate: $5.00—7.00 per page

Copyedit/Proofread

A copyedit/proofread makes corrections to objective errors within the text, rather than looking at plot, flow, etc. It is a much simpler edit and should follow a line edit. Copyediting/Proofreading includes the following:

  • Correction: spelling, grammar, punctuation, dropped words, incorrectly used words

Rate: $3.00—5.00 per page

Submissions

To submit an initial query, send an e-mail to editing@teaguedelaplaine.com and include the following:

  • Sample from your manuscript (5-10 pages)
  • Word count
  • Date you will submit your full manuscript
  • Desired completion date (usually 2-4 weeks after submission)

Your manuscript must be submitted in either Apple Pages (.pages) or Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format as an attachment. Please submit manuscripts in Courier New 12-point font, make sure it is double-spaced, and number your pages.

After submitting the initial query you will have no obligation to hire me and I may decide the manuscript does not fit within my skill set or that I may be too busy to take the job. If we decide to work together, you will receive a contract for services, which you will have to sign and return before any work is started. Please note that I do not offer sample edits, due to the level of my experience and my busy schedule.

Once you have submitted your manuscript* via e-mail you will receive an invoice with instructions for making your payment. Once your payment is received, the work will begin.

*You may include an agent query letter and/or a synopsis (under 5 pages) and/or a blurb with your submission at no extra charge.
